Dr Lucia Michielin

Compuational Archaeology & Digital Humanities

I currently hold the post of Digital Skills Training Manager at the Centre for Data, Culture, & Society and Edinburgh Future Institute. My role focuses on advancing digital humanities research within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Through my work, I design and deliver courses and workshops on digital and computational methods, empowering researchers with practical skills. My teaching spans topics like databases, data visualisation, and statistical analysis, aiming to equip scholars with essential tools for digital and data-driven research.

I am also involved in organising immersive summer schools on text & data analysis through coding. These events foster collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange in the digital humanities community.

My background is in computational archaeology and I hold an MSc in Geotechnologies for Archaeology (Università degli Studi di Siena), a MA in Classical Archaeology (Università degli Studi di Padova) and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

Digital Humanities and using non-conventional methods to reconstruct the past has been a core part of my research and I have worked on interdisciplinary research projects ranging from cultural analytics and statistical approaches to data visualisation, image processing and geographical approaches.

    Projects

Below are some of the projects I have worked on in the last years

Text & Data Analysis Summer School (2021-Ongoing)

Since 2021 I led the organisation of the CDCS annual summer school. The event focused on hands-on computational methods for data and text analysis. These week-long intensive events have taken different shapes across the years but each version has focused on helping researchers from higher education institutions develop their digital and computational skills.

Villa di Vacone - Upper Sabina Tiberina Project (2016, 2019-Ongoing)

Since 2016 I have been the GIS and Survey sepcialist for the Upper Sabina Tiberina Project at the Villa di Vacone excavation. The Upper Sabina Tiberina Project has been transitioning from paper-based documentation to entirely digitally based recording procedures involving the 3D recording of all archaeological context

    Aeclanum - Apolline Project (2016-2018)

The Aeclanum excavations are a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the Apolline Project. I worked mainly as survey coordinator and I was involved with the digital recording of the remains and the production of easily accessible interactive material for visitors of the archaeological park. As part of this project we developed a prototype for presenting data about the unexcavated portion of the Roman site [URL]
